That CNC controller runs XP, doesn't get updates or run AV, and is isolated from the rest of the network. I didn't argue with them why this shouldn't be happening, I removed the client. No wasted effort trying to blame the end-user for what they might have done. If something goes wrong, they just re-flash it from a backup image or ship a new hard drive. So an embedded system is set up to 'just work'. They've told me some REAL horror stories about what 'qualified' IT personnel have ended up doing to their systems, convinced THEY were the ones doing it right.
